About

Tyler Jo Smith is a Professor in the Department of Art at the University of Virginia, specializing in Classical Art and Archaeology. She is a Classical Archaeologist with a focus on ancient Greek figure-decorated pottery, as well as images of performance and ritual in Greek and Roman art. Her research interests include the art and archaeology of alcohol in the ancient world, the representation of animals in Greek religion, archaeology, and fiction, and contextual readings of ancient Greek pottery. Dr. Smith has participated in field surveys and excavations across the Mediterranean, including southwest Turkey, Knossos in Crete, Kato Phana in Chios, Thebes in Greece, and Morgantina in Sicily. She currently serves as Lab Director and Director of Academic Programs for the Caesarea Coastal Archaeology Project in Israel, where she also co-directs the fieldschool. Additionally, she co-founded Kerameikos.org, a linked open data project for Athenian pottery, and heads a cohort focused on 3D scanning and printing antiquities at the Fralin Museum of Art at UVA. Dr. Smith has served as the Director of UVA’s Interdisciplinary Archaeology Program and is the Coordinator of the Mediterranean Archaeology PhD program.
