Sue Carson is a Professor in the Department of Plant and Microbial Biology at North Carolina State University and serves as the Director of the Master of Microbial Biotechnology Program. Her scientific expertise is in the molecular mechanisms of bacterial pathogenesis. Dr. Carson has a significant background in curriculum development for biotechnology and plant biology, having led the NC State Biotechnology Program for over ten years and authored three molecular biology lab manuals. She has been actively involved in promoting inquiry-guided learning and authentic research in undergraduate curricula, including her participation in the Howard Hughes Science Education Alliance. Throughout her career, Dr. Carson has mentored over 100 undergraduate students in research projects and has been the principal investigator and director of NSF-funded programs such as the Integrative Plant and Microbial Systems Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Program. Her work emphasizes fostering student engagement in research, especially among underrepresented groups, and developing educational frameworks that enhance critical and creative thinking skills. She has also completed a two-year rotation at the National Science Foundation in the Directorate for Education and Human Resources, further contributing to her expertise in science education and outreach.
