book-chapter1st authorCorrespondingAbstract This short postscript addresses the following question: what causes natural language to work by means of lexical argument structures? That is, assuming the lexicalist view is correct, then why is it correct? Following the ‘meaning as use’ view of word meaning associated with the later work of Ludwig Wittgenstein, a word meaning cannot be equated with a concept, since language interpretation involves reading the intentions of the speaker. Instead, a word meaning corresponds to a rich pattern of use. Across the different shades of meaning of a given verb that arise in different uses of it, the mapping of arguments from the verb meaning to the subject and object functions remains constant. Thus the verb root is subject to a strong conservative pressure to preserve its argument mapping in the face of sense modulation. The lexical predicate argument structure is the grammatical representation of that strong conservative pressure.
