Stephanie J. Smith is a Professor of History at The Ohio State University, specializing in Latin American history with a focus on Mexico and its cultural and political developments. She joined the department in 2003 after earning her Ph.D. in History from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 2002. Her research explores the complex relationships between radical artists, including Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros, and Frida Kahlo, and Mexico's postrevolutionary state, as evidenced by her book The Power and Politics of Art in Postrevolutionary Mexico. Her earlier work, Gender and the Mexican Revolution: Yucatán Women and the Realities of Patriarchy, examines women's involvement during the Mexican Revolution. Currently, she is working on a new book titled Through Frida’s Eyes: Frida Kahlo and the Creative Women Who Radicalized Mexico. Professor Smith has received numerous research grants, including a Fulbright Dissertation Research Abroad Grant and an American Association of University Women Dissertation Fellowship. She has presented her work at various conferences and institutions, and has been recognized for her teaching excellence with awards such as the Paul Brown Excellence in Teaching Award. She teaches courses on the History of Mexico, Latin American revolutions and social movements, and Latin American history through film, among others.
