Shawn G. Gibbs, PhD, MBA, CIH, is the Dean of the School of Public Health at Texas A&M University, having joined the university on May 1, 2020. He is an industrial hygienist with expertise in the disruption of highly infectious diseases such as COVID-19 and Ebola virus disease. His research focuses on environmental microbiology, environmental exposure assessment, and developing policies and procedures to ensure the safety of responders and healthcare workers treating patients with highly infectious diseases. Dr. Gibbs has authored over a hundred peer-reviewed articles and has contributed to national policies and best practices for infectious disease response. His work has involved guiding organizations like the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Department of State, and the U.S. Air Force. He has held leadership roles at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, Indiana University, and the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, where he contributed significantly to biocontainment research and training, especially related to Ebola and COVID-19. His educational background includes a BS in Biology from Ohio State University, an MS in Environmental Engineering, a PhD in Environmental Science, and an MBA in Agribusiness. A pilot study of core body temperatures in healthcare workers wearing personal protective equipment in a high-level isolation unit

during the 4-hr shift; core temperatures of half (n = 3) of the participants exceeded 38.5 °C (101.3 °F), the upper core temperature limit. Future investigations are needed to identify other heat stress risks both in and outside of controlled units. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic offers unique opportunities for field-based research on risks of heat stress related to personal protective equipment in healthcare workers that can lead to both short- and long-term innovations in this field.
