Scott Marcus is a Professor and Area Head of the Ethnomusicology Program at the University of California, Santa Barbara. His specialization includes North Indian and Middle Eastern musics and performance practices, Arab music theory (maqam), North Indian folk music, tuning and temperament. He is the Founder and Director of the UCSB Middle East Ensemble and the Music of India (sitar) Ensemble, and also directs the World Music Series. Professor Marcus is a member of UCSB’s Center for Middle East Studies and has served as a past Board member of the Society for Ethnomusicology and the Society for Asian Music. He teaches a variety of courses related to Middle Eastern and Indian music, including music cultures of the Middle East and India, tuning and temperament, and lessons on Arab melodic modes, nay, oud, and sitar. His research and publications focus on Arab and Indian music, including topics such as maqam, folk music genres, modulation, improvisation, and religious music in India. He has authored books such as 'Music in Egypt: Experiencing Music, Expressing Culture' and contributed to encyclopedias and anthologies on Middle Eastern and Arab music.
