Ronald E. Rice

About

Ronald E. Rice is the Arthur N. Rupe Chair in the Social Effects of Mass Communication at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he has held this position since 2004. His extensive academic career includes roles such as Chair of the Department of Communication at UCSB from 2013 to 2015, and prior to that, he served as Chair of the Department of Communication at Rutgers University from 2000 to 2003. He has also held visiting professorships internationally, including at the Amsterdam School of Communication Research, University of Amsterdam, and the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication & Information at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. Additionally, he was a Fulbright Scholar in Finland in 2006. Rice's research interests encompass the social effects of new media and telecommunications, communication networks, bibliometrics, public communication campaigns, organizational communication, and the diffusion of innovations. His experience spans management, education, information handling, quantitative research methods, and public relations. He earned his M.A. and Ph.D. in Communication Research from Stanford University, following undergraduate studies in English literature at Columbia University. Throughout his career, Rice has contributed significantly to the understanding of communication technologies and their societal impacts, reflected in his leadership roles, scholarly publications, and editorship of numerous influential books in the field.
