R Howard Bloch is the Sterling Professor of French and Humanities at Yale University. His research has focused on medieval literature and social history, including legal, economic, familial, and political institutions, as well as humor and the fabliaux, gender, and the rise of Western romantic love. He has contributed to the history of the discipline of Medieval Studies and has written extensively on these topics. He holds a medal from the Collège de France, is an officer in the Order of Arts and Letters, a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a member of the American Philosophical Society. Currently, he is completing a book on Stéphane Mallarmé’s “Un coup de Dés jamais n’abolira le Hasard.” His published works include books on medieval French literature and law, literary anthropology of the French Middle Ages, and studies on various aspects of medieval and French literature. Bloch has also engaged in teaching courses related to medieval romance, French literature, and cultural history at Yale.
