Thomas E. Patterson is the Bradlee Professor of Government and the Press at Harvard Kennedy School. His research and writing focus on media, politics, and democracy, with a particular emphasis on the role of mass media in electoral participation and political communication. Patterson has authored several influential books, including 'Informing the News: The Need for Knowledge-Based Journalism,' 'How America Lost Its Mind: The Assault on Reason That's Crippling Our Democracy,' and 'Is the Republican Party Destroying Itself?'. His earlier work includes 'The Vanishing Voter,' which examined electoral participation, and 'Out of Order,' which received the American Political Science Association’s Graber Award as the best book of the decade in political communication. He also authored 'The Unseeing Eye,' named by the American Association for Public Opinion Research as one of the 50 most influential books on public opinion in the past half century, as well as 'Mass Media Election: How Americans Choose Their President' and an introductory American government text, 'We the People,' now in its 14th edition. Patterson's articles have appeared in academic journals such as Political Communication, Journal of Communication, and Public Opinion Quarterly, as well as in the popular press.
