Patricia Smith is a Professor of Creative Writing at Princeton University, appointed in July 2023. She is a distinguished poet and author, recognized for her lifetime achievements with awards such as the 2021 Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize. Smith has authored nine books of poetry, including 'Unshuttered' (2023), 'Incendiary Art'—which has received multiple awards including the Kingsley Tufts Award, LA Times Book Prize, and NAACP Image Award—and 'Shoulda Been Jimi Savannah,' among others. Her work encompasses poetry volumes, children's literature, and historical writings, with her poetry appearing in prominent publications and anthologies. She has collaborated with visual artists, orchestras, dance companies, and performers, creating multidisciplinary productions like 'Blood Dazzler' and her one-woman show 'Life After Motown.' Smith is a Guggenheim fellow, a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and has received numerous honors including the Fuller Award and Furious Flower Lifetime Achievement Award. She is also involved in teaching and mentoring through Cave Canem and the Vermont College of Fine Arts Post-Graduate Writing Program, and her recent work 'The Intentions of Thunder' won the 2025 National Book Award for Poetry.
