About

Dr. Monica P. Morales is an Associate Professor of Colonial Latin American Cultural Studies in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Arizona, where she is also an affiliated faculty member in Latin American Studies. She earned her Ph.D. from Purdue University. Her research interests focus on the systems of domination and critiques produced by colonized subjects from the 15th to the 17th centuries in Spanish America, as well as the ongoing formations of colonial power in Latin America through the present. Her work explores the cultural encounters beginning in 1492 and how these shape the histories and identities of Latin America. Dr. Morales is currently completing her second book, which examines the links between colonial discourse and justice, as well as notions of wellbeing, through relationships of management during the 16th and 17th centuries in the Andean and New Spain regions. Her interdisciplinary research incorporates colonial discourse, postcolonial theory, urban studies, visual culture, and sound studies. Her teaching is grounded in theory, history, and the methodologies that have shaped Latin American colonial studies, aiming to equip students to analyze colonial and postcolonial conditions and situations.
