Michelle Shumate

About

Michelle Shumate (she/her) is a Professor, Delaney Family University Research Professor at Northwestern University’s School of Communication. Her recent research focuses on Systems of Care, which are networks designed to connect help-seekers to benefits, programs, and services offered by government and nonprofit organizations. She has evaluated Coordinated Service Delivery Systems, including an Army Research Office-funded project that examined the outcomes of more than 10,000 service episodes across 11 networks, and completed a statewide scan of such systems in Pennsylvania for The Heinz Endowments. Her current work aims to help Systems of Care determine the right referral for help-seekers to promote greater long-term wellbeing. Shumate is the founding director of the Network for Nonprofit and Social Impact (NNSI), which explores how government and nonprofit networks can be rewired for maximum social impact. She is the author of 'Networks for Social Impact' (2022, Oxford University Press) and has received recognition from the National Science Foundation with a CAREER award. Her research has been funded by prominent organizations including the NIH, NSF, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and Army Research Office, and her work has been featured in Nonprofit Quarterly, Stanford Social Innovation, and the Conference Board.
