Chapter 5 introduces an artful research process and proposes a new system of purpose and procedures to investigate children's spontaneous experiences of spirituality. The myth of Ariadne's thread and the ancient and contemporary customs of the labyrinth inspired us to weave our narrative portraits.

Chapter 7 expands on fieldwork observations of children in secular and sacred settings. Narratives are categorized according to the spiritual interconnectedness among children, peers, families, and communities. Like colorful patches in a quilt, the vignettes form a virtual quilt that becomes a model for researchers, teachers, parents, and others seeking to understand the elusive nature of children's spirituality.

The Introduction explores children's being and ways of knowing as we seek to understand spirituality in children's lives. We review landmark research on childhood spirituality and offer a new perspective, a paradigm shift toward understanding children's inner lives. The Introduction concludes by showing details of our original phenomenological research, in which we observed children expressing their spirituality through music, dance, image, and story engagements.

Abstract Music is a powerful tool that supports children as they navigate through toddlerhood, an intense developmental period of transformation. In this chapter, the author analyzes toddlers’ private pre-sleep vocalizations called “crib songs” (Sole, 2014/2017) to gain insight into the impact of daily musical practices and exchanges. In their everyday lives, toddlers’ experiences and musical moments are shaped by “voices of influence”: parents, caregivers, teachers, and musical environments. Data shared in this chapter include fully improvised crib songs sung about parents and reflections of musical sharing with caregivers, teachers, and peers. Additionally, the crib song examples highlight musical influences from toddlers’ diverse musical surroundings that are shaped by access to technology. By offering glimpses into a few toddlers’ private musical worlds, we may begin to understand how music supports musical and social-emotional development as well as the impact that musical parenting has on raising children and building and sustaining relationships.
