Mari Jo Buhle

About

Mari Jo Buhle is a Professor Emerita of American Studies at Brown University and holds the title of William R. Kenan Jr. University Professor. She began teaching at Brown in 1972 and was the first faculty member to hold a position dedicated to women's studies. Her academic work primarily focuses on the history of American women, U.S. women's and gender history, and cultural and intellectual history. Buhle has trained both undergraduate and graduate students in the American Civilization and History departments, directing nearly fifty dissertations and currently chairing around fifteen Ph.D. committees. Her research initially centered on American radicalism, but she has since expanded her focus to include the history of the behavior sciences in the United States. Buhle authored the book "Feminism and Its Discontents: A Century of Struggle with Psychoanalysis" in 1998, which explores the relationship between psychoanalytic and feminist theories in the U.S. since Freud's visit in 1909. She is working on a related project examining the intersection of Jungian analytical psychology and American feminism in the twentieth century. Additionally, Buhle is a co-author of the widely used college textbook "Out of Many: A History of the American People" and is involved in developing a textbook on U.S. women's history.
