About
Professor Liviu M. Mirica is the William H. and Janet G. Lycan Professor of Chemistry at the University of Illinois. He received his B.S. degree in Chemistry from California Institute of Technology in 1999 and his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Stanford University in 2005. After working as an NIH postdoctoral fellow at the University of California, Berkeley, he started his independent career in the Department of Chemistry at Washington University in St. Louis in 2008. In January 2019, he joined the faculty of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Illinois. His research interests include synthetic inorganic and organometallic chemistry applied to renewable energy catalysis and oxidative organic transformations. He also develops bifunctional therapeutic and diagnostic agents for amyloid peptide disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease and studies the role of transition metal ions in neurodegenerative diseases. His research program involves the synthesis and characterization of novel transition metal complexes that mediate multi-electron redox processes relevant to energy applications and organic transformations, including reactions catalyzed by high-valent late transition metal complexes. Additionally, he investigates the role of transition metal ions in the aggregation of amyloid β peptides and develops bifunctional compounds as potential therapeutic and diagnostic agents for Alzheimer’s disease.

Mn(II) MRI Contrast Agents Supported by Unsymmetric Pyridinophane-picolinate Ligands
ChemRxiv · 2026-05-15
articleOpen accessSenior authorGadolinium-based contrast agents are widely used in MRI, but manganese-based agents have recently gained attention for their favorable relaxation properties and biocompatibility. In this study, we developed a series of chelators based on the 2,11-diaza[3.3](2,6)pyridinophane macrocycle to improve the relaxivity of the corresponding Mn(II) complexes. We evaluated how coordination number and pendant arm selection influence the efficiency of these Mn-based MRI contrast agents. Spectrophotometric titrations showed that 7-coordinate complexes are more thermodynamically stable than 6-coordinate complexes, as expected for Mn(II). However,
