About
Lillian Cruz-Orengo is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anatomy, Physiology & Cell Biology at the School of Veterinary Medicine, University of California, Davis. Her research focuses on the neuro-immune interactions at the blood-brain barrier (BBB) as a relevant contributor to neuropathogenesis and neuroinflammation, with the goal of identifying non-immunosuppressive therapeutic targets. She aims to elucidate whether focal alterations to BBB homeostasis are sufficient to predispose to neuropathology, challenging the notion that global BBB disruption is the primary trigger for neuroinflammation. Additionally, her work assesses non-genetic triggering factors such as environmental exposure, nutrition, and stress, and their role in causing BBB disruption through epigenetic modifications of the neurovascular unit. Dr. Cruz-Orengo holds a PhD from the University of Puerto Rico, Medical Sciences Campus, earned in 2005, and a B.S. from the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras Campus, obtained in 1988. Her research contributes to the fields of neuroimmunology, neuroinflammation, brain barriers, molecular neuroscience, and autoimmunity.
