Laura Wexler is the Charles A. Farnam Professor of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies and of American Studies at Yale University. Her research focuses on the social life of photographs, examining the power of photography at the intersections of gender, race, sexuality, class, and nationalism within the visual cultures of the United States. She is the founder and director of the Photographic Memory Workshop at Yale, a collaborative space for discussing visual culture among students, staff, faculty, neighbors, and practitioners in the community. Wexler is a co-editor of the forthcoming book Collaboration: A Potential History of Photography, which explores the history of photography through the lens of collaboration. She is also the principal investigator of the Photogrammar Project, supported by NEH and ACLS, which creates a web-based interactive research system for visualizing 180,000 American photographs taken by the Farm Security Administration and the Office of War Information between 1935 and 1945. Her publications include works on domestic visions in the context of U.S. imperialism, photography and mental illness, and critical essays on various artists and historical topics.
