About

Katherine Eggert received her BA from Rice University in 1984 and her PhD from the University of California, Berkeley in 1991. She has taught at the University of Colorado Boulder since 1991 and is a scholar of English Renaissance literature and culture, with a focus that spans the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries across the genres of drama, poetry, and prose. Her research interests include Shakespeare on film, John Ruskin, and literature's relationship with early modern science, particularly questions of epistemology and knowledge. Her notable publications include 'Showing Like a Queen: Female Authority and Literary Experiment in Spenser, Shakespeare, and Milton' (2000) and 'Disknowledge: Literature, Alchemy, and the End of Humanism in Renaissance England' (2015). Currently, she is working on a book about Renaissance happiness. Eggert has received year-long fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Folger Shakespeare Library. She has served as chair of the Department of English and as Vice President and President of the International Spenser Society. She is currently the Vice Chancellor and Senior Vice Provost for Academic Planning and Assessment at the University of Colorado Boulder.
