June A Gordon

About

June A. Gordon is a Professor in the Social Sciences Division at UC Santa Cruz, affiliated with the Education Department and College Nine. She holds a B.A. in East Asian Studies from Stanford University, an M.Ed. in Adult Education from Western Washington University, and a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies from the University of Washington. Her expertise encompasses international comparative education, with a focus on marginalized communities and schooling in the UK, USA, Japan, China, and India. Her research investigates cultural and economic factors influencing academic access and achievement at all levels of schooling, as well as the recruitment and preparation of teachers from diverse communities. She explores schooling and teaching careers for working-class and cultural-minority students across various countries, including Britain, Japan, China, and the United States. Gordon's work also examines Asian immigration and the impact of schooling patterns in the 'home' countries on attitudes towards education in America, alongside urban education issues. Her scholarly contributions include numerous publications, presentations, and research projects aimed at understanding and addressing educational inequities and promoting culturally responsive pedagogies.
