John F. Duffy is the Samuel H. McCoy II Professor of Law and Research Professor of Law at the University of Virginia School of Law, where he has been a faculty member since 2011. Prior to joining UVA Law, he served on the faculty at George Washington University Law School starting in 2003, and has also been a faculty member at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law and the William & Mary School of Law. Duffy teaches courses in torts, administrative law, patent law, and international intellectual property law. His research and influence in the field of intellectual property have earned him recognition as one of the 25 most-influential people in the nation by The American Lawyer and one of the 50 most influential in the world by Managing Intellectual Property. He has been profiled in BusinessWeek and named a legal “visionary” by the Legal Times in 2009. Duffy holds an undergraduate degree in physics, served as articles editor on the University of Chicago Law Review, and was awarded an Olin Fellowship in Law and Economics. His professional experience includes clerking for Judge Stephen Williams on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit and for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, working as an attorney adviser in the Department of Justice’s Office of Legal Counsel, and practicing law at Covington & Burling in Washington, D.C.
