Jessica Stanton

About

Jessica Stanton is an associate professor of political science at Temple University and a visiting professor at Boston University’s Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies. Her research focuses on international relations and international law, including the impact of law on the dynamics and resolution of civil wars, domestic and international criminal accountability for wartime violence and terrorism, and the influence of law and institutions in international affairs more broadly. She authored the book 'Violence and Restraint in Civil War: Civilian Targeting in the Shadow of International Law,' which examines why some governments and rebel groups engage in civilian targeting while others refrain, in accordance with international humanitarian law. This work received multiple awards, including the International Studies Association’s Best Book of the Decade Award in 2020, and the Lepgold Book Prize. Her ongoing research involves a project on the global diffusion of anti-terrorism law and its impact on human rights, supported by grants from various institutions. Prior to her current roles, she held faculty positions at the University of Minnesota and the University of Pennsylvania, and fellowships at Stanford University, Harvard University, and the University of Pennsylvania. She earned her Ph.D. in political science with distinction from Columbia University and her B.A. in international relations with distinction from Stanford University.
