Jeffrey T Bury

About

Jeffrey T Bury is the Department Chair and a Professor in the Environmental Studies Department at UCSC. He also serves as the Director of the Center for Integrated Spatial Research (CISR) and is the Associate Director of the GISTAR Program, which focuses on Geographic Information Systems, Spatial Technologies, Applications, and Research. His expertise encompasses environmental studies, climate change, political economy of development, GIS, glaciers, conservation, environmental justice, and sustainability, with a particular focus on Latin America. His research is centrally concerned with the political economies of environmental problems, with recent work focusing on new frontiers of extractive industries, the political economy of climate change, and glacier recession. Bury's work also addresses conservation, ecotourism, and livelihood transformations in Latin America. His field research is closely linked to his interests in political ecology, environment and development, qualitative field methods, and geospatial technologies. He has contributed significantly to the academic community through his leadership in the Political Ecology Working Group, which he has supervised since 2006, and through his extensive teaching and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students. Bury holds a Ph.D. from the University of Colorado, Boulder, an M.A. from The American University, and a B.A. from the University of Utah.
