  • Geospatially explicit technoeconomic assessment of sustainable aviation fuel production: A regional case study in Virginia

    Fuel Communications · 2024-04-08 · 10 citations

    articleOpen access

There is strong interest in sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) to decarbonize aviation; however, local decision-makers will need to consider what additional incentives could stimulate SAF commercialization within their own jurisdictions. This study analyzed SAF production in Virginia, evaluating two biomass-to-energy platforms (gasification Fischer Tropsch [GFT] and pyrolysis) and two regionally abundant feedstocks (woody wastes and municipal solid wastes). A suite of open-access modeling tools we…

  • Systemic Risk Analysis of Agriculture with Climate and Other Stressors

    2024-04-15 · 6 citations

    articleSenior author

Climate and other stressors such as aging facilities, population shifts, political tensions, and technological advancements compound challenges affecting logistics systems, including availability and sourcing of food and water supplies. Ensuring availability of resources is critical to maintaining economic and social balances. For arid regions, particularly those with transboundary watersheds, identifying and addressing risks to the agriculture sector due to water scarcity is critical. The compl…

    • This study develops the use of particular social, hydrological, and other environmental factors in a risk register of basins and vulnerable populations, where societal priorities vary across scenarios of hydrology and water. • Identification of the least disruptive scenario identify that population density is lowest in basins exposed to the warmest air temperatures. • An urban-to-rural migration pattern, such as prompted by a public health crisis, would significantly disrupt basin order given…

  • Process Quality Assurance of Artificial Intelligence in Medical Diagnosis

    2024-05-08 · 3 citations

    articleSenior author

While artificial Intelligence (AI) has shown promising results in the healthcare field, it is undeniable that there are risks associated with AI in healthcare that society must acknowledge. This paper presents a comprehensive systems modeling framework aimed at evaluating trust and being responsive to reasons for mistrust and distrust in AI-assisted medical diagnosis, with a specific focus on the diagnosis of cardiac sarcoidosis, utilizing Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) techniques. Th…
