James Black

About

James Black, MD, PhD, MPH, is an Assistant Professor at the University of Minnesota Medical School, working within the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences. He received his BA in mathematics and psychology at Reed College and earned a dual MD-PhD degree at the University of Illinois, focusing on Neuroscience, particularly neural plasticity and the effects of experience on brain development. His work has included providing psychiatric services in rural communities affected by drug epidemics. Currently, he works as a hospitalist at Regions, where he teaches UMN medical students and psychiatry residents in the Regions-Hennepin residency program. His research interests include rural community strategies for coping with drug epidemics and crises, optimizing psychiatric services for multi-problem families—such as children in foster care, their parents with substance abuse or psychiatric illnesses, and social factors like domestic violence and poverty. He studies early experience effects on brain anatomy, especially trauma, poor attachment, maternal depression, and healing experiences like psychotherapy or enrichment. Additionally, he has engaged in writing on moral injury experienced by individuals with psychiatric and addiction problems, issues of epistemic injustice in psychiatry, and psychiatry futility.
