Gregory Smits is a Professor of History and Asian Studies at Pennsylvania State University. He holds a PhD from the University of Southern California, an MA from the University of Hawaii, and a BA from the University of Florida. His research focuses on Japan, broadly defined, covering a variety of topics and time periods. His past research topics include Confucianism, political economy, earthquakes, volcanoes, seismology, maritime networks, technology, and environmental history. Currently, his research concentrates on the Ryukyu islands between the tenth and seventeenth centuries. Professor Smits has authored several publications, including 'The Ryukyu Islands: A New History, Stone Age-2024' (forthcoming in summer 2025), and 'Early Ryukyuan History: A New Model' published by the University of Hawai'i Press in July 2024. His work also includes contributions to edited volumes, such as 'The Tokugawa World' and 'Maritime Ryukyu, 1050-1650.' He teaches courses on world history and the history of science, among other topics, and his areas of specialization include East Asia and environmental history.
