About

Giuseppe Loianno is an Associate Professor at UC Berkeley in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences and the director of the Agile Robotics and Perception Lab. His research focuses on developing perception, learning, and control algorithms that enable agile, autonomous robots, particularly aerial robots, to navigate complex and dynamic environments. His work links rigorous control theory with data-driven perception and real-time systems, producing open-source tools and benchmarks that facilitate the transfer of laboratory innovations to field deployments. Applications of his research include autonomous inspection, search-and-rescue, and human–robot collaboration. Dr. Loianno received his Ph.D. in robotics from the University of Naples 'Federico II' in 2014. Prior to his current position, he was an associate professor at NYU and held roles as a post-doctoral researcher, research scientist, and team leader at the GRASP Lab at the University of Pennsylvania. His extensive publication record includes over 70 conference papers, journal articles, and book chapters. His research interests encompass perception, learning, and control for autonomous robots, with a particular emphasis on visual sensing, machine learning, and systems. He has received numerous awards, including the NSF CAREER Award and DARPA Young Faculty Award in 2022, and has been recognized as a Rising Star in AI by KAUST in 2023. He also serves as co-chair of the IEEE RAS Technical Committee on Aerial Robotics and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles.
