About

Professor George Heimpel is primarily a parasitoid ecologist with a focus on biological control solutions to pest and weed problems in both agricultural and natural systems. He teaches courses in Insect Behavior and Biological Control and collaborates extensively with students, post-doctoral researchers, and other colleagues to deepen the understanding of interactions that underpin safe and effective biological control. His current research projects include classical and conservation biological control of the soybean aphid in the United States, classical biological control of a parasite affecting Darwin’s finches in the Galapagos Islands, and classical biological control of the imported cabbageworm in the United States. More broadly, his lab investigates host specificity in parasitoids, indirect interactions in natural and agricultural ecosystems, sex determination in parasitoid wasps, the evolution of parasitoid reproductive strategies, and ecosystem services related to biological control in biofuel cropping systems.
