Linda Roethke is a professor in the Department of Theatre at Northwestern University’s School of Communication. Her teaching centers on costume design, freehand drawing, and fabric modification. She maintains a freelance career as a professional costume designer and is a member of USAA. Her national credits include work on productions such as My Fair Lady at Cincinnati Playhouse, Proof, Spinning into Butter at The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, Mrs. Warren's Profession, The Underpants, The Fourth Wall, Shadowlands, A Beast on the Moon, and How I Learned to Drive at Alliance Theatre, among others. Her Chicago credits include Intimate Apparel and I Never Sang for My Father at Steppenwolf, Hecbua at Chicago Shakespeare, and multiple productions at Court Theatre, The Goodman Theatre, and Shakespeare on the Green. Roethke has directed national and international workshops in costume design, drawing, and rendering, and her studio work has been exhibited in galleries such as the Louise Grayson Gallery and Curator's Choice: Around the Coyote. She holds an MFA in Theatrical Design from the University of Iowa and a BS in Art (Painting and Drawing) and Theatre from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. Her awards include a 1992 Distinctive Alumni award from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, a 1998 Jeff Award for Best Costume Design for 'An Ideal Husband' at The Court Theatre, a 1999 Best Costume Design Citation for 'A Little Night Music' at Connecticut Repertory, and a 2006 Suzi Bass Nomination for Best Costume Design for 'The Underpants' at The Alliance. Her courses include design process, stage makeup, costume design, freehand drawing, textile arts, and advanced costume design studies.
