Christina Kiaer is the Frances Hooper Professor in the Arts and Humanities and serves as the Department Chair of Art History at Northwestern University. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. Her teaching and research focus on global modern art and visual culture in the twentieth century, with specialization in the Soviet Union and the art of international socialism. Her interests include the avant-garde and Socialist Realism, collective art practices, textiles, the aesthetics of anti-racism, the lived experience of socialism and revolution, women and everyday life, consumption, and affect. Kiaer has made significant contributions through curatorial projects, including the 2024 exhibition 'Collective Threads: Anna Andreeva at the Red Rose Silk Factory' at the Museum of Modern Art-Costakis Collection in Thessaloniki, and she edited and contributed to its catalogue. Her scholarly work includes the publication of her book 'Collective Body: Aleksandr Deineka at the Limit of Socialist Realism' in 2024. She co-curated the exhibition 'Revolution Every Day' at the Smart Museum in 2017, and co-authored the accompanying book. Her first book, 'Imagine No Possessions: The Socialist Objects of Russian Constructivism,' was published by MIT Press in 2005, along with an interdisciplinary volume of essays on early Soviet life. Kiaer is actively involved in academic and cultural initiatives, serving on the Steering Committee of the Russian, Eurasian and East European Studies Research Program at Northwestern. She co-organized an international symposium on the histories of art, identities, and the war in Ukraine in 2022 and held a visiting professorship at the University of Copenhagen. Her research projects include 'Aesthetics of Anti-racism: Black Americans in Soviet Visual Culture.' She has received postdoctoral research grants from several prestigious institutions, including the Alice Kaplan Institute for the Humanities, Princeton University, the American Philosophical Society, the Social Science Research Council, and the J. Paul Getty Foundation.
