Dr. Sabyasachi Chatterjee is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Statistics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, having joined the faculty in Fall 2017. Prior to this appointment, he served as a Kruskal Instructor in the Department of Statistics at the University of Chicago, where he was mentored by Professor John Lafferty. Dr. Chatterjee completed his PhD in June 2014 in the Department of Statistics and Data Science at Yale University under the supervision of Professor Andrew Barron. His research interests encompass Statistical Signal Processing, Non Parametric Statistical Estimation, Statistical Learning Theory, Statistical Information Theory, and Applied Probability.

On 2017 August 17 a binary neutron star coalescence candidate (later designated GW170817) with merger time 12:41:04 UTC was observed through gravitational waves by the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo detectors. The Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor independently detected a gamma-ray burst (GRB 170817A) with a time delay of ~1.7 s with respect to the merger time. On May 21, 2019 at 03:02:29 UTC Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo observed a short duration gravitational-wave signal, GW190521, with a three-detector network signal-to-noise ratio of 14.7, and an estimated false-alarm rate of 1 in 4900 yr using a search sensitive to generic transients.
