Dr. Peter J. West is a Research Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Utah. He earned his B.S. from Lehigh University in 1997 and his Ph.D. from the University of Utah in 2004. His research focuses on the neuropharmacology of synaptic plasticity, learning, and memory in relation to epilepsy, Alzheimer's disease, and Down syndrome. Dr. West is interested in understanding the pathophysiology and treatment of diseases that affect cognition, conducting studies both independently and in collaboration with the Epilepsy Therapy Screening Program, where he is a co-investigator. His work involves developing novel animal models of pharmacoresistant seizures and evaluating the efficacy and cognitive side effects of investigational compounds. His independent research aims to elucidate the molecular and physiological basis of cognitive deficits associated with epilepsy. To this end, he studies synaptic plasticity deficits and cognitive dysfunction in animal models of epilepsy, and his laboratory is developing the first rodent model of pediatric epilepsy due to abnormal hypothalamic development, specifically hypothalamic hamartoma.
