About

Dr. Heather Miller is a tenure-track Assistant Professor at Carnegie Mellon University in the School of Computer Science, primarily affiliated with the Institute for Software Research. Her research interests encompass various flavors of distributed and concurrent computation, often from the perspective of programming languages, including data-centric, data-intensive (big data), and edge computing with eventual consistency. A major theme in her work is composability, aiming to enable the construction of complex distributed systems through the composition of well-understood, correct-by-construction components. Her projects include developing programming models and type systems to facilitate the design of functional distributed systems, such as distributable closures, flexible serialization, asynchronous and concurrent programming via futures and promises, and deterministic concurrent dataflow. Heather Miller has a significant background in open source software, being a member of the Scala team since 2011 and co-founding the Scala Center to support the Scala community. She has contributed to various aspects of the Scala language and ecosystem, including futures, promises, spores, pickling, and the standard library. Her academic and industry engagement includes co-creating the Curry On conference to foster dialogue between academia and industry, and she has held positions at Northeastern University and EPFL, where she was co-founder and Executive Director of the Scala Center. Her work bridges research, open source development, and community building, with a focus on advancing distributed programming models and fostering collaboration between industry and academia.
