David Sklar

About

Dr. David Sklar is a Distinguished Professor of Medicine at the John Shufeldt School of Medicine and Medical Engineering. He is an emergency physician with a significant background in medical education, injury prevention, global health, and clinical care. He served as the former Editor-in-Chief of Academic Medicine, the leading journal in medical education in the United States, and has authored or co-authored more than 300 articles in medical literature, as well as three books. His professional experience includes serving as a Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Fellow in 2011-2012, during which he worked in the Senate Finance Committee amidst the implementation of the Affordable Care Act. He was a Fulbright Senior Fellow at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland Medical School from 2021 to 2023. Dr. Sklar has held leadership roles such as chair of emergency medicine and associate dean of graduate medical education at the University of New Mexico. He has also served as President of the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the American College of Emergency Physicians. In recognition of his service, he received the 2024 Distinguished Service Award from the Association of Academic Chairs of Emergency Medicine.
