About
Professor Bhavna Shamasunder teaches and conducts research on environmental health and justice with a focus on the disparate and cumulative burdens faced by urban communities of color. Her work is community-based, and conducted in partnership with those most affected by industrial pollution. Her research examines health consequences for communities living nearby urban oil drilling in Los Angeles, and how consumer product marketing and use, and in particular beauty products, might contribute to disparate chemical exposures for women of color. Her work has been supported by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, the National Science Foundation, and the California Breast Cancer Research Program.
