Beverly Wright

Beverly Wright is a Professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Northwestern University. Her research explores the general principles of auditory learning, focusing on how perceptual skills can be improved through various stimuli and tasks. Her lab investigates the conditions necessary for learning to occur and those that disrupt it, examining stimuli ranging from simple sounds to speech, and tasks from fine-grained discrimination to categorization and intelligibility. Her work has demonstrated that exposure to an acoustic stimulus can facilitate learning on perceptual tasks, particularly when this exposure occurs within approximately 30 minutes of practice. Although her research primarily targets normal adults, it also considers how learning changes with age, sensory experience such as hearing loss, and cognitive factors including language and reading disorders. Her research on perceptual learning aims to develop more effective training strategies for enhancing perceptual capacities and treating perceptual disorders.
