About

Barum Park is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at Cornell University. His research interests include political sociology, social networks, and social mobility. He focuses on how various social dimensions intersect to create social structures, with particular attention to political polarization and social mobility. His work on political polarization demonstrates how cross-cutting lines of ideological conflict prevent belief systems from bifurcating into clear-cut liberal and conservative positions, a structure that has emerged due to the dealignment of moral issues from traditional ideological cleavages in the US over the last decade. In the realm of social mobility, he employs network approaches to identify boundaries to worker flows and examines how these boundaries intersect with occupational class divisions. Currently, his projects explore the dynamics of political polarization during the 2016 US presidential campaign using data from online forums, as well as expanding research on worker flows and mobility boundaries utilizing data from workers' resumes. Dr. Park received his Ph.D. from New York University in 2020 and holds a B.A. in German literature and sociology from Sungkyunkwan University in South Korea.
