Dr. Armin Schwegler is Professor Emeritus of Spanish and Portuguese at UC Irvine, with a research focus on the history of Spanish, dialectology, historical linguistics, typology, Creoles, and the relationship between language and globalization. His work emphasizes the study of the Spanish language from a linguistic perspective while exploring its social, cultural, and historical contexts. He has integrated population genetics, particularly DNA research, to reconstruct the African origins of Latin America's Black populations, notably through his investigations of communities such as Palenque de San Basilio in Colombia. Schwegler completed his Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley, where he focused on the history and typology of Romance languages. His scholarly contributions include over 70 articles and several books, with research taking him across Latin America, including Ecuador and Cuba. His notable work includes a book on the Cuban ritual language Palo Monte and interdisciplinary studies on Palenque, combining genetic and linguistic fieldwork. He has also co-edited volumes on creole languages and the Iberian linguistic challenge.
