Ariela J. Gross is a Distinguished Professor of Law and History at the University of California – Los Angeles. She previously held the position of John B. and Alice R. Sharp Professor of Law and History and served as Co-Director of the Center for Law, History, and Culture at the University of Southern California. Her scholarly work focuses on legal history, race, and slavery, with notable publications including the books 'Becoming Free, Becoming Black: Race, Freedom, and Law in Cuba, Virginia, and Louisiana,' which won the 2021 Order of the Coif Award and the John Philip Reid Award, and 'What Blood Won’t Tell: A History of Race on Trial in America,' which received multiple awards including the James Willard Hurst Prize and the Lillian Smith Award. She is currently working on a book titled 'Erasing Slavery: How Stories About Slavery and Freedom Shape Battles Over the Constitution,' under contract with Beacon Press. Gross earned her JD (Order of the Coif) and PhD in History from Stanford University and has held visiting professorships at several prestigious institutions worldwide. Her research and writings explore the intersections of law, race, and history, and she has been recognized with numerous fellowships and awards for her contributions to the field.
