Andrea Woody is Divisional Dean of the Social Sciences and a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Washington. She holds a Ph.D. in history and philosophy of science from the University of Pittsburgh, obtained in 1997, and a bachelor's degree in chemistry with certification in Theater and Dance from Princeton University. Her research interests include philosophy of science, history of science, aesthetics, and feminist perspectives in philosophy. In philosophy of science, she focuses on explanation, modeling, and representation, with particular interest in diagrammatic, graphical, and pictorial representations, exploring the roles of explanatory discourse in scientific practice and the pragmatic factors influencing scientists' representational choices. She has worked on projects involving automated search techniques and optimal control theory in quantum domains, molecular chemistry, and biology, supported by the Templeton Foundation, and has an interest in public philosophy. Additionally, her work in aesthetics considers issues related to performing arts, including the identity of performing artworks, virtues of live performance, and site-specific artworks. She has served as Editor-in-Chief of Philosophy of Science, was Chair of the Department of Philosophy from 2016 to 2022, and has contributed to various editorial boards and professional organizations.
