About

Michael Freeman, PhD, is an Associate Professor affiliated with the Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology & Biophysics at the University of Minnesota Medical School. His research focuses on the discovery and heterologous expression of pathways and genes involved in the biosynthesis of metabolites from unique microbial sources. He is particularly interested in natural product biosynthesis, microbial genetics, and targeted metagenomics. His laboratory investigates how small molecules known as natural products are produced in the environment, with a special emphasis on natural products generated by uncultivated microbial 'dark matter' and those produced by unconventional bacterial and fungal sources. Dr. Freeman's work aims to advance understanding of microbial natural product pathways, contributing to the fields of microbiology and biochemistry.
