Steven Ashby is a Clinical Full Professor at the School of Labor and Employment Relations, where he is also involved with the Labor Education Program in Chicago. He holds a PhD in American History from the University of Chicago, earned in 1993, along with an MA in International Relations from the same university and a BA in Sociology from the University of California at Berkeley. His research focuses on the U.S. labor movement, including union corporate campaigns, contract campaigns, work-to-rule actions, strikes, strike strategy, labor-community coalitions, political involvement, and non-violent civil disobedience. Additionally, he researches and teaches about teachers and teachers’ unions. Professor Ashby has received numerous awards for his work, including Best Book of the Year awards from the United Association for Labor Education, the Working Class Studies Association, and the Illinois State Historical Association, for his publications on labor history and movements. His contributions extend to teaching courses on labor studies, social movements, globalization and workers, and providing extension courses for unionists on topics such as U.S. labor history, internal organizing, steward training, and union leadership.
