IN ationalism and nationality are slippery concepts.For some, nationality connotes ethnicity; for others, it is synonymous with citizenship.In some parts of postcommunist Europe, nationalism is a critical source of social cohesion, in others, a source of fragmentation and violence.This volume reflects the varied nature of nationalism in contemporary Europe as well as ongoing confusion within both academic and policymaking circles about what nationalism is and how it affects Europe's landscape.Some of the chapters have primarily conceptual objectives; they seek to clarify our understanding of nationalism and of how it affects societies, states, and interstate relations.Other chapters focus on specific regions in Europe and study the causes and effects of nationalism in those areas.Still
