About
Prof. Chiara M. F. Mingarelli is a gravitational-wave astrophysicist and Assistant Professor at Yale University, affiliated with the Yale Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics. Her core research focuses on using Pulsar Timing Arrays to detect low-frequency gravitational waves, and she has also explored electromagnetic counterparts to gravitational-wave events, such as fast radio bursts. Mingarelli received her Ph.D. from the University of Birmingham in 2014, working with Prof. Alberto Vecchio. She has held prestigious positions including a Marie Curie International Outgoing Fellowship at the California Institute of Technology and the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy, as well as a Flatiron Research Fellowship. Throughout her career, she has secured over $1 million in grants and prizes from organizations such as the NSF, the ERC, and Amazon. Her honors include the AAS 2023 HEAD Early Career Prize, recognition as the 2022 Springer-Nature “Inspiring Women in Science” runner-up, and the APS “Woman Physicist of the Month” for November 2016. Her work has been published in the Springer Thesis Series, and she has received grants from the Royal Astronomical Society, the UK Institute of Physics, and the NSF. Mingarelli has contributed to popular science through an invited guest article for Scientific American, participates in Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls, and regularly appears on the Science Channel’s “How the Universe Works”.
